How Much Does a Bathroom Addition Cost?

A bathroom addition runs from  $10,000 to $25,000 .

The price depends on where it will be located. If it’s close to existing plumbing, it will run you less because the plumber won’t have to install many new pipes. A location away from plumbing will take more time, making the cost go up.

Even if the job requires new plumbing, a crawl space makes it easier (and less costly) to install new plumbing. If you have a slab foundation, your project will be more expensive because the plumber must cut through concrete.

The rate also depends on the type of fixtures you choose. You’ll find sinks, toilets, faucets and bathtubs at a variety of price points. If your budget is tight, choose your fixtures carefully to keep expenses low.

Here are other prices to consider as you plan your project:

  • Pipe installs – $600-$1,600 per fixture. Total depends on number of new fixtures (like toilets, faucets or sinks).
  • Shower parts & installation
  • Labor : $1,200-$5,500
  • Doors : $100-$300
  • Faucets and showerheads : $20-$300
  • Bathtub installs – Labor : $1,000-$5,000 – Tub: $200-$2,000
  • Ceramic Tiles : $2-$20 per square foot
  • Sink and faucets : $300-$500
  • Toilet install : $250-$450
  • Fan : $250-$500
  • Mirrors : $50-$150 or more depending on size or vanities with attached cabinet
  • Flooring – Ceramic tile : $1-$2 per square foot – Linoleum: $5-$7 per square foot – Porcelain: $6-$9 per square foot – Marble: $16-$18 per square foot
  • Cabinets – $350-$450 per linear foot – Buy ready-made or custom
  • Electricity – Electricians charge $70-$80 an hour – Does not include price of light fixtures

Should I Add a Half Bath or a Full Bath?

The kind of bathroom you choose is a big factor in how much it will cost to install. It also makes a difference to how much value and comfort it brings to your home.

  • Half bath: sink, toilet, mirror
  • Three-quarter: half bath with a tall shower
  • Full bath: sink, toilet, shower and bathtub

Size depends on several factors:

  • Your budget: A small half bath is much cheaper than a large full one. The more fixtures you add, the higher the price.
  • Your space: If your space is small, consider a half bath. The size for a half should be 3-4 feet wide and 6-8 feet long.
  • The location: If your addition will be near your main living area, add a half bath for guests. If it is near a new bedroom, consider a three-quarter or full.
  • Resale value:  Some people add one to increase the resale value of a home. A half bath increases the resale value by 10.5 percent. A full one increases it by 20 percent.
